You do not need to know your way around a fishing rod to enjoy a private day on Vancouver Island. Start with your family’s interests, ages and time available—Randy will help you choose a realistic outing.
No shared departure
A private trip for up to four guests.
There is no pressure to keep up with a boat full of strangers.
Your group has the boat and Captain Randy’s attention. Rods, reels, tackle, bait and instruction are supplied. Experienced anglers and complete beginners can share the day; tell Randy who is coming and what each person hopes to try.
All guests, including children, count toward the four-guest limit. Share children’s ages and any comfort or mobility questions before booking so suitability and lifejacket arrangements can be discussed personally.
The actual vessel is a 26-foot Seaswirl Striper walkaround, with a portable toilet in the closable cuddy for privacy. These are useful comforts, but the boat remains a working fishing environment and sea conditions matter.

How long should a first family trip be?
Two or three hours: a shorter coastal outing
A shorter outing can suit families fitting time on the water around a holiday. These trips are offered in select morning or evening windows. Discuss whether coastal sightseeing or local fishing opportunities best match your group and the time available.
A shorter trip does not promise calm water, a particular species or a catch. Randy will discuss a practical plan for your date.
Four hours: time for a focused fishing experience
The half-day charter is an option for families who want fishing to be the main activity. It allows time for instruction and working local opportunities without committing to a full day. Ask Randy whether it suits the ages and interests in your group.
Six or eight hours: for a group that wants more time
Longer trips give more flexibility as conditions change. Choose them because everyone wants more time aboard, not because more hours guarantee fish. Breakfast sandwiches and a BBQ lunch are included on the eight-hour charter; confirm food and drink plans for other durations.
Prices are for the whole private boat, not per person. See current trip rates and any select-date offers. Rates are kept together so a temporary promotion is not mistaken for a permanent family package.
Before leaving the dock
Make the first trip comfortable.
- Tell Randy the number of adults and children, children’s ages and everyone’s fishing experience.
- Discuss lifejacket fit, boarding, mobility and any concerns about time at sea before paying a deposit.
- Bring layers, weatherproof outerwear, non-slip shoes, sun protection and personal medication.
- Arrange the required fishing licences before fishing; ask about the requirements for your group.
- Confirm snacks, drinks and meeting instructions, and leave a cooler in your vehicle for any legal retained catch.
Trips depart from Sunshine Beach Marina in Nanoose Bay, near Parksville—not from your hotel. Meeting and parking instructions are provided when the trip is confirmed. Review the preparation FAQ and safety information.

Captain Randy Zinck brings more than 35 years fishing British Columbia waters, including time as Head Guide at Queen Charlotte Lodge. His role is to guide, explain and plan around the people aboard and the opportunities available.
Fishing, retention and wildlife sightings depend on current regulations, season and conditions. No catch or wildlife encounter is guaranteed. If your family’s priority is simply time together on the coast, say so in your inquiry.
